As you probably well know Apple has officially released yesterday iOS 5.1.1. I think that Apple has mostly aimed to prevent the jailbreak community to release an untethered tool for iOS 5.1, as the development for it was almost to the end. However iOS 5.1.1 does bring some new features, a couple of bug fixes and security patches and some small improvements.

MuscleNerd, a well respected iPhone Dev Team member, confirmed earlier today that Redsnow for iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak tool is now available. Redsnow 0.9.10b8b as it is called can be used to jailbreak A4-based iDevices like iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1 and iPod Touch 4G and below. For those of you who don’t already know Redsnow for 5.1.1 is available for both Windows and Mac so you don’t need to worry about your operating system.

In order to proceed to our Redsnow 5.1.1 jailbreak tutorial you need to have the following requirements:

Download Redsnow for Mac or Windows

micro-USB cable

Backup your iDevice in iTunes for safety

iOS 5.1.1 installed

download iOS 5.1

Now that you are all set we can start the step by step set of instructions and jailbreak your iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch 4G with Redsnow for iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak tool.

Step 1: Start Redsnow

Step 2: Click on “Extras” and then choose the “Select IPSW” option

Step 3: Browse the IPSW file downloaded ( iOS 5.1 ) when prompted and select it

Step 4: Head on to Redsnow main screen and select “Jailbreak”. Before you proceed make sure that the “Install Cydia” option is selected.

Step 5: You will be prompted with a set of instructions to enter your iDevice into DFU mode. Follow those instructions carefully.

Step 6: When you iDevice will enter in DFU mode Redsnow 5.1.1 will automatically perform the rest of the process. Sit back and relax. When your iDevice reboots Cydia icon should appear on your home screen, which means that you have successfully managed to jailbreak your iDevice with Redsnow for iOS 5.1.1 (0.9.10b8b).

Take notice that this only a tethered jailbreak. This means that every time your iDevice runs out of power or you just turn it of you will have to boot it into the jailbreak state. This process is pretty simple, just launch Redsnow, select Extras and then “Just Boot” option.

Stay tuned for more information regarding jailbreak. We will keep you up-to-date with the latest jailbreak tools, jailbreak news and other cool stuff. Also feel free to post a comment below if you have any issues or questions.

You can jailbreak 5.1 untethered or tethered depending on the type of jailbreak software that you use and mostly depending on the availability of that software. The tethered jailbreak only lasts until you reboot your iDevice at which point you will need to redo the jailbreak procedure once again.

Some of the most popular jailbreak tools are Redsnow, Snowbreeze and Absinthe. You can use any of those tools to jailbreak your iDevice, depending on firmware, model and serial. Here at ApplePro we will help you identify which tool works for your device and also fix any issues you might encounter along the way.
